The entities subject to decisions on authenticity and fitness checking of euro cash are required to carry out the handling of euro cash on machines and devices that have been successfully tested. The checks are conducted by euro area national central banks pursuant to the regulations of the European Central Bank relating to euro banknotes and of the European Commission relating to euro coins.

The lists of machines are regularly updated and published on the webpage of the European Central Bank – euro banknote handling machines and on the webpage of the European Commission – euro coin-processing machines.

In addition to the cash handling machines on the previously mentioned lists, available in the market are also euro banknote authentication devices, which can aid retail vendors and other users of euro banknotes to detect counterfeits but cannot entirely replace user judgement in checking the security features of euro banknotes. The said devices are also tested by national central banks.

Application for machine and device testing

The manufacturers and authorised agents of cash handling machines may have the tests conducted at euro area national central banks.

As of 1 January 2025, it will also be possible to have cash handling machines tested at the Croatian National Bank in line with the regulations of the European Central Bank relating to euro banknotes and of the European Commission relating to euro coins.

To initiate the procedure for the testing of cash handling machines with the Croatian National Bank a query should be sent to the following e-mail address: cash-machine-testing@hnb.hr, after which the applicant will receive a notification regarding the required documents and all other details pertaining to the completion of the device or machine test.
